Vancouver City Councillor Lenny Zhou proposed to increase the short-term rental licence fee from $109 to $1000 for 2024. He argued that this increase will help to hire more enforcement staff and generate $2.7 million in revenue. He believes that the fee increase will not hurt the legal market and that the additional revenue can be made in two days. Other cities in BC have higher short-term rental fees, and the provincial government is set to introduce legislation this fall to help local governments better regulate short-term rentals.
