Vancouver City Council has approved a 7.5% property tax increase for 2024, lower than the staff recommendation of 8%. The increase is part of a $2.15 billion operating budget, which includes additional funding for the police and fire departments. Mayor Ken Sim defended the increase, stating that lower tax increases are expected in the future. The budget also includes a $180,000 boost to the mayor's office budget, which has generated controversy among opposition councillors. The tax increase does not factor in utility fees, which are also expected to rise annually.
